The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that offers financial support to people in the construction field who endured life-altering injuries. Once a year the organization honors numerous recipients with a grant and earlier in the year the Joseph Groh Foundation was happy to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, originally from Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil endured a massive stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the function of his left arm and the experience left his left leg seriously impaired, leaving Adil with foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors worried that he would eventually be confined to a wheelchair.
Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, putting financial stress on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was told about the WalkAid System, an apparatus that uses functional electrical stimulation to help someone with foot drop walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they would not be able to afford the WalkAid System in addition to the comprehensive rehab that would be required so he could understand how to use it.
Thankfully, a specialist at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, due to the incredible grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
